Assistant Editor

With direction from Editors and Senior Editors, the Assistant Editor works on the day-to-day maintenance of sites in the television entertainment category. The Assistant Editor must have the ability, desire, and flexibility to learn and work across a broad range of entertainment genres and target a specific demographic (women ages 18-34). Demonstrated experience writing and editing in a specific voice in the entertainment genre is preferred. The ideal candidate thrives in a collaborative team environment and has the ability to effectively manage deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced work setting. The ideal candidate also has a background in web publishing with a solid understanding of how to optimize content for readability and presentation for the web. Familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO) and social media is a bonus.
Primary Responsibilities:
Coordinate content and publishing schedule of TV sites
- Help develop, write, and edit content (articles, photos, and videos) in a specific voice
- Load content into content management system
- Monitor and react to breaking news
- Research topic areas and competitive offerings
- Analyze and react to performance of content types
Provide editorial support to Senior Editors and Editors
- Assist Editors with execution of editorial plans
- Conduct ongoing site maintenance and management
- Contribute to ongoing editorial strategy by helping to develop new types of content
Skills and Experience:
- B.A. in English, journalism, or related field
- 1 to 2 years of editorial web publishing preferred
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience working with or managing freelance writers/editors preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within tight deadlines
- Understanding of how people read online and how to optimize content and presentation for the web
- Understanding of online publishing sites
- Familiarity with search engine optimization and photo editing programs a plus
